mateo’s musings

people use the word “musings” waaay too much

mateometzger.info

Well, I’ve become one of “those guys” who is going to make you update your bookmarks and/or rss feeds.

There are a lot of advantages of letting wordpress.com host your blog, but there are (in my opinion) even more advantages of hosting your own wordpress blog.

I was thinking about waiting until I have the new site polished and pretty before announcing it, but decided it’s more fun to fly by the seat of my pants.  If you are the type of person who likes RSS feeds, there’s plenty of choices on my new site, and you can just subscribe to the topics that interest you (or just subscribe to all posts, regardless of topic).  If you’re the type of person who comes to visit the site, expect to see lots of changes as I settle in on the theme/layout/widgets I like.

Currently I have several tabs for you to choose from, depending on which info from mateo you are interested in. If you prefer, you can see all the different topics jumbled together.

Without further adieu, you can follow this link to my new home.  I just moved in, and I’m still unpacking, so please pardon any messes.

Thoughts about My Church

I realize that 90 percent of you (that means 9 of the 10 total readers) already read this on Tim Stevens’ blog, but for you who didn’t…

This blog post came into my Google Alerts the other day, and by the first few lines that came through I thought, “oh great, another blogger talking trash about my church.”  I’m glad I took the time to read it though, because this guy actually seems to *get* it.  Furthermore, he’s writing on the Wesley Report site, which is apparently about “United Methodist News, Life, and Culture”

Check it out and then tell me what you think.

it’s a good thing i was not drinking milk

because it would have come out of my nose…. Dana sent me this link. Let me give you an excerpt…

“I picked out.. ..a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw.. ..my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me.

I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation.”

I’ll let that whet your appetite, and you can read the whole thing after the jump.

thoughts on Cynthia Ware’s presentation

she made a very good point that applies to our household. She said that her husband is so glad she blogs because that takes a thousand words out *re-directs a thousand words* of her daily vocabulary.

In our house, I am definitely the talker (though our 2-year-old is already giving me a run for my money). I have a MINIMUM number of words I need to GET OUT every day, and my wife has a MAXIMUM number she can TAKE IN before I start sounding like Charlie Brown’s teacher.

Anyone who reads this can see that I’m not one who would be categorized as a “writer” but I’m finding this more and more to be a great way to knock a few hundred words out. I’m sure my wife appreciates that too.

oops, I did it again

It’s a really good that that when I’m at home I’ve got a wonderful wife to talk some sense into me when I get too focused on something. The last two nights here at the conference, I’ve found that I get wrapped up in making something big happen, and I forget to go to bed. I really REALLY didn’t intend to stay up late tonight after staying up too late last night. Here it is, 2:40 in the AM and I just realized how late it really was, that I’m hungry, and I’ll be getting very little sleep again tonight. The good news is, my part of this project is nearing completion!

sleepy There…I just took a picture of my very sleepy self on my phone and emailed it to myself. Now to insert it in this post…. aren’t you all so very glad I took the time to do that before going to bed?

It’s a viscous cycle isn’t it? I realize I’m up too late, so I write about being up too late, which keeps me up even later. Ok, now i’m just rambling, It’s 2:49 am.

good nightttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

feed readers

In preparation for my upcoming move, I’ve been working hard on consolidating my webby life into easy-to-use online services. The biggest struggle for me has been deciding on a feed reader. I like the simplicity of Google Reader, but… it just feels like there’s something…. lacking. I had used Bloglines in the past, but again there just seemed that there should be something more. I think I was wanting an online reader that felt more like an offline application. Enter Bloglines Beta. Tony Morgan mentioned in a recent post so I thought I’d give Bloglines another shot (plus I’m always a sucker for betas).

I like it!

I’m still in the honeymoon phase with it of course, and I don’t really have anything concrete to say other than it “feels” like they got it right. He also mentioned something about Feedburner not working right lately, so I suppose I’ll be taking the Feedburner chicklet down too (I had just put it up, so last I checked, no one had subscribed through it).

My question is, what feed reader do you use and why? I’m still open to jumping camps if there’s one that proves to be better.

*update on gOS* It’s not at all what I expected it to be, but I really do like the OS, so I’ll be leaving it on my linux pc for a while. I’ll review when I’ve had some more quality time with it. And while Joel told me that the Wal-Mart cheapy PCs got pulled, all I can find on it is that the first 10,000 sold out, and apparently had good reviews. I’ll do some more research.

Thinking about it…

I’m gearing up to actually start blogging seriously, but I haven’t settled in on a platform yet. I’ve been using WordPress on self-hosted sites for a while now, and I really like it. I’m also looking at Blogger, MovableType, and a few others. There’s some interesting news on the horizon that will explain more fully why I’m shifting from casual blogging to something a little more serious. I’ll fill you in when the time comes.
